Melilla will have 17 school nurses which will be incorporated from the beginning of the 2025/2026 school year in the city's public and subsidized schools. The measure arises from a agreement signed with the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training, and seeks to strengthen healthcare and prevention in the educational environment.
The agreement, already published in the Official Gazette of Melilla (BOME), establishes that these professionals will work with 25-hour work weeks, providing coverage in the second cycle of Early Childhood Education and in Primary Education. Autonomous City of Melilla assumes the cost of the initiative with a budget of 724.339,15 Euros.
What the agreement contemplates and which centers it affects

The agreement guarantees the presence of School nursing staff in the Infant (2nd cycle) and Primary schools, covering both the public and private networks. Coverage will be maintained. until the end of the 2025/2026 academic year.
The incorporation of at least 17 professionals, who will distribute their tasks among the different schools according to the needs of each center, determined by the educational authorities.
La Provincial Directorate of Education will designate a person in charge who will coordinate the actions, establishing common guidelines and protocols for the operation of the service and the relationship with the educational community.
A will also be created Monitoring Commission with representatives from both institutions to oversee implementation, manage incidents and conduct periodic evaluations.
Financing, resources and health coordination

La Autonomous City of Melilla will fully finance the initiative, with a budget of 724.339,15 Euros. In addition, the agreement includes a possibility of expansion if additional credits are available.
La General Directorate of Public Health will provide the essential medical supplies so that nursing staff can perform their duties in educational centers.
El Ministry of Education will provide schools with the furniture and computer equipment necessary to facilitate the work of school nurses, as established in the Regulations for Health Centers and Services in Melilla (January 17, 2007).
Likewise, the Ministry will manage with the INGESA the appointment of a health interlocutor that will facilitate communication between health centers and nurses, and will promote the training collaboration of INGESA professionals with the new staff.
Duties of school nursing staff
Nurses will take on tasks of direct care, monitoring and prevention, with an emphasis on student safety and health education.
- Emergency care: wounds, trauma, accidents and other immediate interventions.
- Administration of medication and vaccines, with treatment control and first aid kit maintenance.
- Basic assessments: taking vital signs, anthropometric measurements and care respiratory, neurological and skin.
- Support for students with special needs and coordination with educational teams.
- Promotion of healthy habits: food and hygiene, oral health, affective-sexual education and prevention of TCA, addictions and mental health problems.
This deployment seeks increase prevention, improve the response to daily emergencies in the centers and promote educational actions related to health that are part of school life.
The incorporation of school nursing in Melilla, through a framework for collaboration between the City and the Ministry and with coordination of INGESA, strengthens a stable health service in Early Childhood and Primary Education to move towards safer and healthier educational environments.
